The smell attracted a cab driver, who asked for it instead of a hotdog. The fascinating taste of the new sandwich attracted drivers from all over the city, and they soon visited Olivieri for steak sandwiches.

The tasty sandwich became so popular, that Olivieri even opened Pat’s King of Steaks, on 9th Street. Yet, it wasn’t until 1949 that an employee “Cocky Joe” Lorenzo added cheese atop of the steak.

The original Philly sandwich is absolutely appetizing, but if you replace the card-rich roll with a cabbage wrap, you will get a delicious, but lighter meal.

Philly Cheesesteak Cabbage Wraps
Even though the original recipe of Philly cheesesteaks is very delicious, sometimes people need something lighter from the menu. Whenever you have a craving for Philly cheesesteak, try replacing the roll of the sandwich with a wrap from a cabbage.
With this amazing recipe, you will decrease the intake of carbs and gain the beneficial substances contained in cabbage.
- 8 large green cabbage leaves
- ½ large onion sliced thinly
- 2 Tbsp. of vegetable oil, divided
- 2 large bell peppers sliced thinly
- 1 tsp. of oregano
- Kosher salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- 1 lb. of skirt steak sliced thinly
- 6 slices of provolone cheese
- Add water to a large pot and boil it. Branch the cabbage using tongs and drip the leaves in the water for 30 seconds. After, place the cabbage on a plate lined with a paper towel to dry them
- Heat one tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the bell peppers and onions to the pot and season them with salt, pepper, and oregano as desired. Stir the peppers and onions for 5 minutes till they soften or cook them till tender. Remove them from the pot after.
- Add the rest of the oil into the pan and add the steak in a single layer. Season the steak as desired with pepper and salt. Each side of the steak needs to be cooked for 2 minutes or until the steak is seared on each side.
- Combine the peppers and onion in the pan alongside the steak. After, add the provolone cheese on top of the mixture and cover the pan until the cheese melts.
- Scoop the mixture in the center of a blanched cabbage leaf and fold the other end of the cabbage over the mixture. Roll the leaf to form a burrito with one open end.
