Neuroscientists Strongly Recommend that You Visit the Beach Regularly. Here’s Why

Everybody enjoys spending time at the beach, enjoying the refreshing waves, the warm sand and the sun. Also in this article we will give you a few good reasons to spend time at the beach, because you can improve your physical and mental health at the same time.

The Journal of Environmental Psychology published a study, the author was J. Aaron Hipp, who is a Ph.D environmental expert and an assistant professor at the Brown School, and here is what he reported about the restorative benefits of the beach:

“Many studies have proven that natural environments such as waterfronts and beaches can offer more benefits to humans than the gyms, built urban environment and entertainment venues.

The most restorative environment at the beach is when the tides are low and the day temperatures are mild. People who were visiting the beach, on a day that was about 3 (F) warmer, than other days, have 30% decreased chance to perceive the coastal park or beach as restorative, comparing to the ones that were visiting the beach when it was colder.”

1.Sun

Many health benefits can be provided from the exposure to sun, such as vitamin D accumulation, improving the calcium absorption, and therefore strengthening our bones. Many health issues and diseases can be developed from the vitamin D deficiency, such as congestive heart failure, heart attacks, stroke and other heart problems.

The Mayo Clinic claims that, exposing at least 10 minutes in the sun, can be enough to supply your body with the proper amount of vitamin D. Your body is able to produce from 10,000 to 25,000 IU of vitamin D, in the time right before your skin starts to appear pink.

Also the exposure to sun was found to prevent from autoimmune diseases and increase the endorphin levels. The vitamin D deficiency in our body can cause the development of congestive failure, heart attacks, strokes and many other heart problems, as we mentioned before.

If you want to decrease the risk of developing skin cancer, then you need to limit the exposure to the excess sunlight, and remember to always apply sunscreen, especially with an SPF above 15.

2.Seawater

The seawater is rich in many minerals such as, potassium, magnesium, and iodine, all of which are able to detox our body, heal it and treat many infections. Many studies have proven that the sounds of the waves are stimulating our brain to release more serotonin and dopamine, that the blue color is calming us, therefore improving our mood!

Swimming can also treat anxiety, depression and lower the stress. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, swimming is one of the most effective and powerful physical exercises, and in the U.S. it is the 4th most popular sport. Swimming will help you stay in shape and fit, because moderate swimming will help you burn 414 calories in one hour.

Also swimming is able to soothe joint pain, decrease the risk of many chronic diseases, improve our heart health and it is very beneficial for people who are dealing with arthritis. Also the nasal passages will become moist through swimming, therefore eliminating the mucus from the nose.

The water contains salt, and that salt is able to eliminate blackheads, pimples, acne, and cure the skin, healing cuts and sores too. Roman physicians and Ancient Egyptians have also valued the effectiveness of the sea salt.

Also the salt water can be a perfect replacement for hair shampoo, because it will exfoliate the scalp an cleanse the oils from the hair too!

3.Sand

Most of our nerve endings are in the soles of our feet, also in our sweat glands. So, walking barefoot will stimulate these nerve endings a lot more, than when we wear shoes.

This can improve our mood and strengthen our feet muscles as well. Also walking on hard surface requires from 1.6 to 2.5 times less the energy than walking on sand barefoot. Dr. Thierry M. Lejeune, M.D:

“More mechanical work is preformed by our muscles, when we are walking or running on sand, compared to when we are walking or running on a hard surface.”

The walking on sand will eliminate dead skin cells, exfoliate our skin and support the production of new cells and their growth. Also burying yourself into sand will simulate your metabolism, because that way you are fooling your brain that you weight more than you do, so your heart rate will increase.

So whenever you have some free time and you have an opportunity, grab your swimsuit and go to the beach, enjoy the serenity of the place, the azure waters, and its beauty, simply get the maximum benefits from it!
